From 18th to 20th of September 2024, the European Society for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EUSAAT) organized a 2024 conference in Linz, Austria. This conference takes place every two years, and it aims to bring together scientists in the field of 3R (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement), who are developing new models to minimize in vivo animal studies and obtain more human relevant results. Tim Ravnjak, PhD student at NIB, presented his work as a poster, titled: HepG2 spheroids: A new testing approach for the determination of adverse effects of chemicals. This model is in accordance with the 3R strategy proposed by EU REACH legislation and, in comparison to traditional 2D culture conditions, provides enhanced liver-specific functions, higher stability and prolonged viability. He presented results on how Griseofulvin exposure (24h and 96h) impacts cell viability, proliferation, DNA double strand break induction and mitotic cell formation. The work was financially supported within the frame of HEU project CutCancer, which was also acknowledged on the poster presentation.
